Salobrena is a busy small town that attracts many Spanish visitors but is not yet visited by large tour operators. Its whitewashed houses are clustered around a rocky outcrop that overlooks the sea and shelters a fertile valley where sugar cane, avocados, mangoes and custard apples are cultivated. Inland rise the peaks of the Sierra Nevada and water from these mountains is fed around the fields in irrigation channels built by the Moors.

Below the main town there is a long beach with a wide promenade and “chiringuitos” selling local fish and seafood dishes. The ancient part of Salobrena is a maze of narrow winding streets climbing up to the old Moorish castle that dominates the town. The walk to the top can be thirsty work but there are numerous bars and restaurants to provide welcome refreshment. The views from the castle of the sea, valley and mountains are spectacular, lush with bougainvillea and the perfume of jasmine.
